A trip along Route 45, also known as the Purple Heart Highway, is a journey back in time. Iroquois Indians called it the Karondinah Path. Stage coach drivers referred to it as the Penn’s Creek Path. In modern times, it became Pennsylvania State Route 45. In 1994, this 100 mile route through scenic central Pennsylvania’s Huntington, Centre, Union, Northumberland and Montour Counties was christened “The Purple Heart Highway” since the Route 45 corridor has been home to many recipients of the Purple Heart, America’s decoration for military personnel who were wounded in combat.
Today, Route 45 celebrates its latest incarnation as a thriving artists’ trail. From Danville in the east to the village of Water Street in the west, the Route 45 corridor is home to a wealth of artists working in many media. Drawing inspiration from the beautiful countryside, these men and women work in both contemporary and traditional styles. The quality and range of their work is outstanding. If you’re looking for distinctive artwork – be it a unique gift or shopping for yourself—and the opportunity to interact with artists and craftspeople, be sure to plan your next road trip along Route 45.
Your journey will take you through the many historic towns and villages that are located along Route 45. Lewisburg, Mifflinburg, Aaronsburg, Millheim, Boalsburg, and Spruce Creek offer visitors many opportunities to enjoy historic architecture, museums, heritage and cultural events, quaint shops, and glimpses of life in Pennsylvania before the advent of the superhighway. Route 45 links two well known educational and cultural institutions: Bucknell University in Lewisburg and The Pennsylvania State University in State College.
Route 45 is also home to many charming inns, guesthouses, cabins, and bed & breakfasts, plus modern hotels offering one of a kind experiences for the both the seasoned and novice traveler.
